The Heartfelt Journey Behind Pet Canvas Co.™: From Riley’s Legacy to Your Pet’s Portrait

The story of Pet Canvas Co.™ begins with a precious yet mischievous puppy who was born on December 6th, 2005. Although the breeder was suggesting a black littermate, the brown miniature poodle puppy with phantom markings was tugging on our heart strings. We named him Riley, "Mr.Personality". He turned out to be the best choice for our family; a special dog whose spirit and heart left an indelible mark on everyone who met him. Riley was a little girl’s best friend and a companion whose zest for life was truly infectious. From his playful antics to his impressive achievements, Riley showed us what it means to live fully and love deeply.

Riley's adventures knew no bounds. He was up for anything! He enjoyed car rides, hiking, and running beside a bike. He delighted in learning and performing tricks, whether they were whimsical, like blowing bubbles in his water dish, or more serious, such as racing through agility courses or jumping up into open arms. Riley loved everyone. One of his favorite activities was going through drive-thru's and putting smiles on worker's faces. He also had a deep love for squeaker toys, and even in his senior years, Riley's playful spirit never waned until the last few months of his life. Each day with Riley was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life and the joy of sharing those moments with a loved one.

The time we had with Riley was a gift we didn’t take for granted. For 18 and a half incredible years, Riley graced our lives with his unwavering loyalty, boundless energy, and a kind of love that only a true friend can provide. When Riley passed away in late May 2024, our hearts were heavy with grief. He was such a sweet and special boy that had made quite an impact, so we knew we wanted to create something beautiful to honor his memory—something that would capture the essence of the joy and love he had given us throughout his life.


In our search for a fitting tribute, we turned to a seemingly popular custom pet canvas website, hoping they could provide the artistic custom pet portrait that would reflect Riley’s unique personality. We envisioned a large, striking piece of art in a creative style that would serve as a lasting reminder of him and his colorful personality. However, the reality fell far short of our expectations. The art preview we received featured a generic poodle, completely missing the mark on capturing Riley's individual charm. Moreover, the special toy that was so significant to Riley was completely botched.



A series of failed portrait proofs from the company that claimed to make custom pet portraits of pets. The images look nothing like Riley, more like a stereo-typical girly little poodle. The special toy that is supposed to be in his mouth is depicted in failed ways including outside of his mouth and as objects that are not even toys.


A process that started out full of excitement took a horrifying turn when we realized that they were not actually taking artistic care in their process nor were they creating work that was fully based from the photo reference provided. After several frustrating rounds of revisions and unsuccessful attempts by the company to get it right, we realized that our vision for Riley's tribute was something that they would not be able to achieve. The lack of care from this company was hard on our grieving process, seeing Riley's memory blatantly disrespected.


Determined to honor Riley in the way he deserved, we took the reins ourselves. Armed with our skills in graphic design and generative art, we embarked on creating a custom pet canvas from scratch. The result was a quality portrait that was a creative and true representation of our beloved dog, and something we couldn't wait to hang on our wall. We designed a colorful, abstract graffiti-style portrait that captured Riley’s playful spirit and vibrant personality in a way that no commercial option could. This process not only helped us heal but also illuminated a new purpose for us.




The first Best Pet Canvas, an artistic street-art style portrait of Riley holding his special squeaker toy. The style is called Colorful Abstract on the Best Pet Canvas website and consists of lots of color, paint drips, and paint splatters.


This personal experience sparked the creation of Pet Canvas Co.™ We realized that our unique skills and passion could help others who wanted to memorialize their pets in a way that was as special and individual as the pets themselves.
